Michele Carrión-Yopps is looking out for yoga teachers with a great new app called Yoga Moxi™, “For Yoga Teachers, by Yoga Teachers.”
Since her initial 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2014, Carrión-Yopps contemplated what she learned and how challenging it can be to commit it all to memory. In our conversation, she revealed she found value when remembering her teacher’s admonition to “teach what you know.” As her experience in teaching grew, she became convinced there was a tool missing from the toolbox of most new yoga teachers, and she decided to create it. With 20 years of experience in broadcast media in sales and marketing, recognizing a need and finding a solution came naturally.
While working in radio, she found herself in the gym practicing yoga then working on yoga teacher training on the weekends. Time spent on yoga created a zen space in a busy and sometimes stressful life. After a serious conversation with her husband, she decided to continue learning yoga from the best teachers available and to dedicate herself to sharing what she learned.
During the Covid pandemic, the idea of creating a tool for new yoga teachers solidified, and she began working with an app developer on the YogaMoxi app. Based on personal experience and a great deal of research completed with new yoga teachers, YogaMoxi is designed to be a resource for yoga teachers and students to find support, inspiration, wisdom, and guidance. The name YogaMoxi says it all; an app to help new yoga teachers be confident in all they offer.
Carrión-Yopps is all about sharing. “The more I taught, and the more I spent time with students and yoga teachers, the more I learned. The more I learned, the more I wanted to share,” said Carrión-Yopps. In fact, many of the resources and the app itself are complimentary.
Carrión-Yopps’ extensive yoga teaching experience includes studios, luxury hotels, fitness centers, and yoga for first responders including police officers and firefighters. The more she taught, the more she wanted to teach and learn. Putting all she experienced and learned about yoga into the app allows her to reach even more people.
The app features an expanse of regularly updated information and offerings, with content including various yoga styles and lineages, themes for class, anatomy, and more. Users of the app can even find sequence suggestions, a common area of struggle for new yoga teachers. Carrión-Yopps knows she can’t possibly fill in all the gaps alone, and is currently seeking yoga teachers to contribute and collaborate with in order to expand the offering.
Some of the tools Carrión-Yopps raves about include the various timers, to help keep new teachers on time while teaching Hatha, Yin, or Nidra. A “Scheduler” will keep track of all your classes and, within the scheduler, teachers can set up the timer to keep class on track. Each teacher can customize the timer to their liking, allocating time for “Opening,” “Warmups,” etc.
Though the app and many of its tools are complimentary, there are some extra perks for subscribers, which include “Class Tracking.” If you prepare invoices for clients, or track your designated sessions for Yoga Alliance renewal or certification hours, the app has you covered. will meet those needs.
Recent enhancements include an “Events/Offers” tab for collaborations and partnerships with studios, trainings, wellness services, etc. Future updates to the app will require a small fee for this service. The plan is to grow the app from local, to regional, to national, and later translate it for international purposes, which can expand your audience as a yoga teacher.
According to Carrión-Yopps, “The app is meant to be a comprehensive resource and guide for yoga teachers and students to access in one place all the little nuggets they’ve learned.” Should a teacher need a refresher, some guidance, or a quote to inspire their class, they can go to the app and find what they seek to be more confident when they teach a class. In fact, app user Elena C. calls YogaMoxi, “Google for yoga teachers.”
You can find the app in the Apple app store or on Google Play. If you’d like to collaborate with Carrión-Yopps on yoga content, Events/Offers, or general feedback, you can reach her at yogamoxibiz@gmail.com.
Dawn found yoga in 1998 and it changed everything. Soon after she was telling everyone she knew about it. After years of dedicated study of yoga Dawn is joyfully sharing yoga with others. She offers thoughtfully sequenced classes, workshops, and more with bits of wisdom and experiential learning woven throughout. Her ongoing aim is to help people mobilize their inner resources, find the “user guide” for their own bodies, and experience the ease, embodiment, and insights available to all practitioners. And she does this with a light heart and playful practice, in fact she’s known for her giggle.
